When Nick meets Sheeni Saunders, he gains the hormonal motivation and timeless definition for his rebellion. Determined to gain Sheeni's attention and romantic interest, Nick eventually will invent two alter-egos, François Dillinger and Carlotta Ulansky. François is Nick's French "bad boy" side, the personality which is not afraid to do anything in his attempt to impress the beautiful Sheeni. Carlotta is Nick's sensitive side, which he uses to avoid the police in their hunt for François.

Youth in Revolt by C. D. Payne has won the interest of both youth and adults alike with its witty and entertaining portrayal of the woes and tribulations that inspire teenage angst and subsequent rebellion. The complete Nick Twisp cycle is told in three parts, entitled Youth in Revolt, Youth in Bondage and Youth in Exile. It has seen several adaptations including a stage play and an attempt at a TV show. In 2010, after continual attempts, a successful film adaptation was released, starring Michael Cera.
